About Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga was created by and named after yogi B.K.S. Iyengar, and is a form of Hatha yoga. It emphasizes precision and control to achieve the different asanas (poses).

Instructors use their understanding of body musculature and body mechanics, and often incorporate props such as blocks, belts and blankets into classes, to enable students of all levels and capabilities to achieve the correct postures.

Since every body is built differently, with different levels of flexibility and strength, most of us need a bit of assistance at first — that's where the blocks, ropes, mats and blankets come in. Performing poses correctly means your body gets the maximum benefit of the pose without injury.
